Yahoo Livestand wants to be the Google News on tablets

But Google would probably do it better

THE DRIFTING WEB PORTAL Yahoo is in the doldrums, but it hopes catch some wind with a content scheme that takes advantage of the hype and interest in all things Ipad or tablet.
Yahoo Livestand is an Ipad and Android app that we will see at some point in the next six months, what Yahoo calls a 'digital newsstand' that will carry content from multiple publishers, changing depending on a user's interests.
It will differ from an app like Rupert Murdoch's The Daily, as it will display content from several publishers rather than just the one. It should do a similar job to a news aggregation service like Google News, as all it is going to do is repackage content.
But at launch the content might not be quite there, as it looks like it will only offer content from Yahoo partners. That might be a big problem, as competitors will have similar services.
Yahoo, perhaps knowing that Google has got the jump on it when it comes to the desktop, has looked at tablets as a possible growth area. Whether this will work out well is questionable.
But at least the company is trying to do something, rather than sit on its fingers. With the Google juggernaut showing no sign of slowing up, innovation might be what Yahoo needs, if it doesn't want to be another Nokia.
These days, the earlier billion pound offer from Microsoft must be looking all the more like a lost dream to Yahoo shareholders. ยต
